Money management is one of the most important aspects of our lives, especially considering the various uncertainties which we face almost everyday. As we become more economically stable in our lives, handling our money becomes even more complicated. Finance mismanagement could be disastrous, and we could end up losing money.
Not all of us have the knowledge or expertise to handle finances on our own. Hence it would be wise for us to seek guidance and help from a certified financial planning advisor. They are licensed and equipped with the knowledge to help you with managing your material wealth.
They are also known as CFP or certified financial planners. The services normally include helping you with your savings, investments and growing your money. A good planner could easily act as your accountant, stock broker, insurance agent, and your personal coach, all at the same time.
It is not that simple to find such a professional who would be totally compatible with you. That person should be patient enough to listen to you and give you a personalized service, along with providing you with the awareness on various aspects of finance. He should clearly explain about all the actions taken on your behalf, and about why it is in your best interests.
However, it is not so simple to find the planner who will be the right one for you. You wouldn’t want somebody to take complete control over your finances without you being guided on what is being done very clearly. You should be able to understand if any action taken is in your best interests or not.
There are few questions which you could ask the CFPs in order to make sure that you are hiring the right person to guide you with your future finance aspects. The answers to those questions will help you in making the right decision.
Some of them are:
1) How is the standing on U4?
The U4 is a report card is specially designed for CFPs and it has detailed information on their backgrounds. If he had committed any mistakes in the past, it will be listed on the person’s U4.
2) What kind of client volumes do you handle?
Knowing the answer to this question could turn out to be very important. If he is dealing with too many customers simultaneously, then the chances are that he might not be able to give you that personalized and timely support.
3) How long have you been working in this industry?
It is very important to look for a certified financial planning advisor with decent amount of experience in their field. If they do not have substantial prior experience, it is not really advisable to hire them. The chances are that the person would not be certified to do the job either.
This again does not mean that the person without much experience is not good for you, because they will need to be very competent and knowledgeable to get certified in the first place. It could also work well in your favor, as you might get some room to negotiate on the service fees.
You will need to know about their specialization areas as well to ensure that they are not pushing you towards investments with the intent of only earning the commissions. Clear understanding of the risk factors involved with various types of investments is very important.
4) What kind of a network do you have?
You will need to make sure if he is capable of bringing in other experts or officials whenever required. You might also want to know if he will give you advice on buying stocks, mutual funds, life insurances or other investment products. These features in a CFP will make it easier for you to deal with your finances from a single point of contact.
5) How much do you charge?
I know this is an obvious question, but you should make sure that you are hiring the person for the right price.
Generally, these planners charge in various ways. They might work strictly on commissions, hourly fees or flat fees. You’ll need to decide on what kind of payment option will suit you the best
6) Will you be signing up a legal agreement with me?
You will need to make sure that he provides you all the details on the services offered in the form of a written agreement. This document could turn out to be important for your future references, especially if there are any conflicts.
If you are able to select the right certified financial planning advisor, you will be able to manage your money matters quite efficiently.
